Summing up my life and moves to 8 countries, some of them several times, let me summarize my tips on relocating to another country:

1. Only Move If Necessary. If you’re seeking a better job or conditions, try finding them where you are now. Moving can be resource-consuming, but read on if you still want to move.
2. Move Toward, Not Away. Don’t move to escape problems—we think the grass is always greener elsewhere. Move towards your dreams and better opportunities.
3. Organize an Introductory Trip. Revisit the country, even if you were a tourist before. Evaluate it from a resident’s perspective, not as a tourist. What fascinated you before as a tourist could be a pain tomorrow—ask those who live near the Red Light District in Amsterdam.
4. Secure Accommodation: Only sell/ stop rent your apartment once you have a place in the new country. Being without a home, even with funds, is brutal. You need an anchor during this change. I sold my apartment, left boxes at my son’s place, and went to have some enlightening vacations in Bali. The idea sounded nice, but the reality was different—for the first time in my life, I felt homeless. I probably need another vacation and brainwashing in Bali not to attach tp material possessions .
5. Bank Accounts: Ensure your bank doesn’t cancel your account due to the move. Mine did, despite my being their client for 23 years. Tip: keep multiple bank accounts in different countries to avoid issues. How to do that is the subject of another article…
