Few years back, I was teaching an online course on #Internationalcareers & opportunities for 35 PhD students at Kaz Nu University. Intelligent, educated, in their 30s, and we had fun! Sharing concepts about different cultures and making careers in different corners of the world was wild.
But there was this one lecture about #digitalnomads living it up in Bali and Thailand… When I was presenting, the mood in the group was different…I’ve asked if they like the concept…
It turns out they found it irresponsible to leave behind families and homes ( 😮) to seek fun elsewhere. Kazakh people, deeply rooted in their tribes, believe in the power of #community. Your tribe’s approval is everything; they’ll all judge if they don’t like something. It goes back to the time when survival meant unity among – well, nomads in the steppes – not modern, digital ones. That requirement for approval is still strong today.
Me? As you can guess, I don’t live by that law ( well, I was not born with this right and had to fight for it:-😂). But discussing it made me and them feel… not uncomfortable, but distant.
I believe – no, it is my mantra: Everyone has a choice today: follow tribal standards or forge their own path despite anything.
