Will Procurement Be Replaced by AI in 2025? The Uncomfortable Truth…
AI is moving fast. It’s automating sourcing, predicting supplier risks, and even conducting negotiations. For many procurement professionals, also for myself, this sparks a real fear: Will my job still exist in a few years?
From what i see is happening in Supplier`s potfolios and my consulting clients cases: AI is already taking over many of the repetitive, data-heavy tasks. And this is great!
It can process purchase orders instantly, analyze endless streams of supplier data, and even flag compliance risks before they become problems. It’s efficient, precise, and tireless.
But here’s the thing: AI lacks ( at least for now!) what makes procurement truly valuable—human insight, creativity, and relationships.
Think about it. AI might suggest the best supplier on paper, but it can’t assess the subtle trust factors that come from real-world experience. It can analyze negotiation patterns, but it can’t read the room, adapt to emotions, or build long-term partnerships. And when a supply chain crisis hits, it takes a human leader to make the tough calls, balancing risk, ethics, and strategy.
And simply – we can not make AI responsible, it should be someone on paper to blame for
So, my opinion is- procurement isn’t dying—it’s evolving. Those who embrace AI as a tool, rather than a replacement, will thrive. Procurement professionals who shift from manual processing to strategic leadership, supplier collaboration, and innovation will be more valuable than ever.
And those who resist change? They may struggle to keep up.
What do you think—will AI be a partner or a threat to procurement professionals? Let’s discuss
